Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental treatment that aims to improve the appearance of teeth by removing stains and discolouration from the surface of the teeth. This is usually done using a bleaching agent, typically containing hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which can break down and remove the molecules that cause staining.
Teeth can become discoloured for a variety of reasons, including:
- Age: As we age, the enamel on our teeth can become thinner, allowing the yellowish dentin layer underneath to show through.
- Food and drink: Certain foods and drinks, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and dark berries, can stain teeth over time.
- Tobacco use: Smoking or using other tobacco products can also cause teeth to become discoloured.
- Medications: Some medications, such as antibiotics or antihistamines, can cause teeth to become discoloured.
Teeth whitening can be done in a dental clinic, using stronger concentrations of bleaching agents, or at home using over-the-counter products such as whitening toothpaste, strips, gels, or trays.
